Appendicitis is a medical emergency that usually requires urgent surgery to remove the appendix. The signs of appendicitis in the chronic form of the illness are not always detectable. In case there are symptoms of pain in the abdomen, especially in the lower right side or the middle-lower region, accompanied by vomiting and/or fever, a doctor needs to be consulted. Open appendectomy remains the most common approach due to operative time and cost.
Chronic appendicitis is relatively rare and the symptoms are very mild, which makes it very hard to detect. An alternative theory for the cause of appendicitis is an initial rupture of the appendix followed by spread of bacteria outside of the appendix. Not everyone with appendicitis has all the symptoms.
